I am a CompScience grad with knowledge of JAVA basics but I work in a different platform. Which exam would be easy for me to get through in a short term as I would be able to put in only my free time apart from working hours for preparation.

I think you should ask yourself why you want to be certified. The best choice is not necessarily the quickest or easiest.

(See Sun - Java Certification.)

Thanks for the link Marc. I want to take up SCJP to enter into Java assignments in future. Do I need to have java programming experience to take up SCJP. Because many people whom I know have prior experience of doing a project when they are taking SCJP. How much will this lack of experience affect the preparations. Or can I start with simple java programming, will that help

You need SCJP to be eligible for any other Java certification such as SCJA or SCJD.

SCJA is considered an "entry certification," while SCJP is a "foundation certification." Neither of these have prerequisites.

The SCJP foundation is required for any "speciality certifications" (SCJD, SCWCD, SCBCD, SCDJWS, and SMAD).

(See Sun link posted above.)

The SCJP exam tests basic programming knowledge. So (in general), a person without programming experience should expect to devote more time and effort to preparing for the exam.

In other words, project experience is not necessary. But what you haven't yet learning through practical experience, you will need to learn through study and practice.

That's what the SCJD, SCWCD, etc come in.

And I was mixing up the SCJA with SCEA - I thought it was Architect, not Associate.
