is coding practice really needed for scjp?isnt a strong base in theory enough for passing the exam?

It depends what you mean by coding practice. You do not need to have written big programs but for most people the best way to learn is to write at least plenty of small programs that test out the principles.

Hi Riya,

I would suggest to do as much practice as you can. Here practice doesn't mean you have to write big programs, but concept should be clear. Once you will start reading for the exam & doing mock exam then you will automatically come to know your weak areas, where & what type of practice you need.
I am not expert in java. I am just writing my views �� Even I am preparing for SCJP

Also, it can be best to use a simple text editor and use the java / javac commands.
