Hi ranchers,

I plan to take the SCJP 1.5 in two months. I had these doubts about the books....

1. Has Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates' book come out for 1.5? If so please give me the ISBN.
2. Is this a correct book? (It has stuff for the developers exam too?)
ISBN: 0072253606
Title : Sun Certified Programmer for Java 5 Study Guide (Exam 310-055)
By : Katherine Sierra, Bert Bates
3. or has Khalid Mughal book been out for SCJP 1.5? If so please give me the ISBN.

thanks

That's the right book - with the correct ISBN - it has chapters for the SCJD, but those are all on the CD - the entire printed book is for the SCJP 5 exam - it should be available before the end of the year.

Hi,

iam also planning to give scjp 1.5.
As there are no proper books available in market until now (K&B book is not yet released) , iam going through the tutorials available on suns site.
For topics covered in scjp 1.4 we can go thru K&B book and khalid mughal book.
If any one likes to discuss and share preparation, they are most welcome.
you can mail me to my id.

Thank you
Deepthi

Bert ,
Are you going to release the indian edition also for the book at the same time ? Please suggest . Many people, mainly me, can not afford to buy an US edition . If u are not releasing the Indian edition at the same time , please let US know, so that we can have other plans .

I have the Sierra & Bates book for the SCJP 1.4 exam and have studied it inside and out.

I'd ultimately like to get certified via the SCJP 1.5 exam - is there a good way to cover the difference in material or is the best option to wait until the new book is released? Not sure if it's better to wait and possibly risk forgetting what I've learned so far (not to mention spend even more time with the new edition of the book) or just take a best shot with what I know right now. Anyone look at the exam simulator from Whizlabs?

BTW, Amazon originally had the release date set for 11/30/2005 but looks like it's now 1/31/2006...

You are better off assuming the authors information is accurate about the release date than anything that appears on Amazon (see Berts earlier post). You could purchase my book right now which is written for the JDK 1.5 objectives. See

Hi all,
I have just bought the book by Marcus Green. I find it very helpful in my preparation for scjp5.0 exam. Its to the point and covers almost all the objectives of the exam. I strongly recommend it for anyone preparing for the exam. And moreover, no other book is available as of now, this is the best option i guess.

In addition to the online book by Marcus Green, i m studying Ivor Horton's Beginning Java 2 JDK 5 Edition by Wrox Publications. Though its not meant for the SCJP5.0 exam, but its a very good book to learn Core Java in details. And most of the objectives of the exam are covered very thoroughly. But i am really surprised that nobody has mentioned this book in the forum yet. Anyways, check it out at the following link:

Hi Guys, Hi Dinesh,

Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates' book for java 1.5 is available
The ISBN is : 0-596-00920-8

This is the ISBN for Head First Java, which is about Java 5, but it's NOT a certification book. Our certification book will be available in late December.

Sorry for the confusion.

hth,

Bert

I would like to see a part of the book to know if I like how it's written and if information appears clearly. I also want to know if someone else read this book and found that it contains enough information to pass the test with success. I read reviews from others books, there's some reviews of your book somewhere ?

You can see my style of writing and how I cover such material at

http://www.jchq.net/certkey/index.htm

That is the entire contents of the last version of the book which was aimed at the JDK 1.4 version of the exam. Where the material overlaps with the JDK 1.5 objectives that is a useful resource for study of the current exam.

There's exercices like the version for 1.4 in the book? There's mock exam or we need to buy some on your site ?

Thanks for the answers

Hi everyone, I'm new here.

Marcus Green, does the audio CD of Tiger Tamer Java have enough content inside to pass the SCJP exam for Java 1.5, considering that I already have the Kathy and Bert book for the Programmer and Devoloper certification exam for Java 1.4?

If I buy it, can I download it rather than get the actual CD sent to me, I live in Venezuela.

It only covers the first 4 Objectives (which occupies 60 minutes). It is not available for download only via CD purchase.

Can anyone recommend this book?

Complete Java 2 Certification Study Guide
http://www.amazon.com/Complete-Java2-Certification-Study-Guide

Although the customer reviews are not too zealous it has been written by the ones who developed the real test questions.

Oh, one more question:
Isnt there any interactive software for preparation?

We are working on the 3rd edition of our book. It will cover SCJP 1.5.
It will shortly be available through Rough Cuts on Safari, and new versions will be posted as the manuscript evolves:
http://safari.samspublishing.com/roughcuts

We hope to have the book on the shelf in your favourite bookshop by the time JavaOne fanfare starts up in May.

The messages referring to that ISBN are all from November 2005, when the book wasn't yet on the market.

The K&B SCJP 5 book has been available for almost a year now

I think the confusion here is that this is a very old thread that got ressurected a few days ago.

I'm going to lock up this old, confusing thread.

If, as of December of 2006, anyone has any questions about books for the SCJP 5 exam, they can start a NEW thread
