But if you are very young and you take it and pass we will probably suggest you should be spending your youth with an xbox/ps2/conkers. However if you are fabulously old we will all be very impressed

While it would be neat to pass the SCJP at that age I think it would a complete waste. It will be many years before there is even a chance that having that bullet on your resume will be of any value and by that time it will be too out of date to help. It would want to learn Java that is wonderful, but just learn it for the sake of learning it. Have fun and program a few games with it. Don't worry about certifications until you start looking for a job in the field.

Hey Selwyn,

if I were you, I wouldn't worry about any exams.

Do the mocks (as you say), have fun with them.
Do a bit of serious and non-serious programming as the others say.
But don't think about exams.
If you ever need these certs you'll have to do them again with Java_6 or 7 by then.

Keep on posting though

Stuart

I also would give you the advice not to waste your youth.

I only want to mention that it might impress potential employers if the applicant has had a proove of knowledge already in its early youth... but even from the professional point of view in most cases an applicant that only knows the technical / artificial side of life is of few interest.

So, if you really could pass the exam with few additional effort, then I would say you could think about trying it... but the most important thing is the motivation behind it: if you have any feeling of 'must', then don't do it... but on the other hand, if it's fun for you, then why not?

To stress it: I think the most important thing is that you don't have any stress or hard feelings about it. If this is the case, you should take it more easy...

Personally, I learned a little bit of programming at the age of 10 or so, just for fun, then I didn't use any computer for about ten jears. Some day I rediscovered programming; now I hold a master of science in computer science.
