If you are a Beginner then i would suggest you pick up one book on SCJP Certification and get the Basics Clear with it. Sybex's Complete Certification Guide is the one that i use. It is a good one. There are many others that are equally good. Pick one and stick to it. Once that is finished, you can start giving some mock exams, Marcus Green is the most famous one for this
That is it. Maybe all this can be done over three weeks if you are a newbie.
Hope that it helps!!

If you would like a quick crack at the exam then i suggest you go for SCJP 1.4 it does not include questions pertaining to the new java features such as generics , autoboxing , unboxing etc etc. However this is not the latest version of the exam. If you want to be certified with the latest version of SCJP take SCJP 1.5 which includes questions on the new topics such as generics.

Since you are a beginner i suggest atleast 3 to 4 months of preparation with lots of practise. I suggest you go for the SCJP study guide by Kathy and Bert for java.
