I am new to Java Ranch and would like to know from the folks out there as to which certification to go for, SCJP 1.4 or 1.5?

I started preparing for SCJP 1.4, and am following "A Programmer's Guide to JAVA Certification S.E." by Khalid Mughal and Rolf Rasmussen

Do you guys think this book would be good enough for getting certified or am I also supposed to follow any other book?

Your opinion would be greatly appreciated.

Eagerly waiting for your valuble response

Oops, I forgot to include this line in my previous post.

Is the new version of the exam SCJP 1.5 or 5.0?

Do not want to sound dumb in my future posts with the wrong version.

Thanks in advance

Dude,

If you read the Granny page in www.javaranch.com, one of the statement was:

[Thompson's Rule for first-time telescope makers] It is faster to make a four-inch mirror then a six-inch mirror than to make a six-inch mirror.

By this, I would advice you to take the 1.4, then upgrade yourself to 1.5. But again, I might be wrong. So it's your wish.

Hi Avinash,

Welcome to JavaRanch!

Is the new version of the exam SCJP 1.5 or 5.0?

SCJP 1.5 and SCJP 5.0 are the same; they're used interchangeably. SCJP 1.5/5.0 (CX-310-055) is the newest version.

It really depends on what you want to gain from this certification. If you've just started preparing for 1.4 and would like to learn JDK 1.5 new features like generics, autoboxing/unboxing, I would suggest you go for SCJP 1.5.

Thank you Vijay for your suggestion with a good quote.

And Joyce thanks for your warm welcome and clarifying my doubt.

I think I will continue my preparation with those topics common to 1.4 and 1.5 for now.

Hi Avinash,

I personally chose the 1.4 exam for the following reasons

1) Heaps of companies still use 1.4, so knowing the limitations and nuances of this version is advantageous. Code written for 1.5 won't necessarily work on 1.4, but 1.4 code will work on a 1.5 compiler (I think). If you do all your coding in the 1.4 specification, your programs will still work on most of the JVM's out there.

2) There is more study material available for 1.4

3) You can always learn the additional features of 1.5 after the exam. If it still bugs you, you can always take the upgrade exam later.

4) JQPlus is still at 1.4 level.

Given that, as time goes on, and JDK 1.5 gets used more widely, and more study material becomes available. I'd recommend that people take the 1.5 instead

Hey Phil,

Thanks for your insight buddy. Will keep your suggestion in mind. As of now I am still preparing myself for the SCJP1.4 certification.
