SCJP 1.5 and SCJP 5.0 are the same; they're used interchangeably. SCJP 1.5/5.0 (CX-310-055) is the newest version.
I am new to Java Ranch and would like to know from the folks out there as to which certification to go for, SCJP 1.4 or 1.5?
I started preparing for SCJP 1.4, and am following "A Programmer's Guide to JAVA Certification S.E." by Khalid Mughal and Rolf Rasmussen
It really depends on what you want to gain from this certification. If you've just started preparing for 1.4 and would like to learn JDK 1.5 new features like generics, autoboxing/unboxing, I would suggest you go for SCJP 1.5.
I personally chose the 1.4 exam for the following reasons
1) Heaps of companies still use 1.4, so knowing the limitations and nuances of this version is advantageous. Code written for 1.5 won't necessarily work on 1.4, but 1.4 code will work on a 1.5 compiler (I think). If you do all your coding in the 1.4 specification, your programs will still work on most of the JVM's out there.
2) There is more study material available for 1.4
3) You can always learn the additional features of 1.5 after the exam. If it still bugs you, you can always take the upgrade exam later.
4) JQPlus is still at 1.4 level.
Given that, as time goes on, and JDK 1.5 gets used more widely, and more study material becomes available. I'd recommend that people take the 1.5 instead

Thanks for your insight buddy. Will keep your suggestion in mind. As of now I am still preparing myself for the SCJP1.4 certification.
