Applet Displaying a Database

Hi,
I have recently began to code simple applets.
I now wish to incorporate a simple database into
the applet.
Something easy like a scoreboard for some game.
I do not have an idea of what to use to do this at all. The only requirement is that I will need the database to be a SQL7 database.
I do not know how one would connect to a database from a applet on a web-page, nor how to display the data.
Could anyone help me or point me to a site that can explain it.
Thanks in advance.
Alex....
