I was very late in starting preparing for exam. My voucher will expire on 31st May. I am not able to manage time for doing further studies for 1.5. So I decided to go for SCJP 1.4 only.

Well deciding was difficult. Finally settled for 1.4.
At first there was difficulty in getting 1.5 book. less material available online. And I guess since companies will have 1.4 legacy, 1.4 will be there in demand for some more time.
I have got the voucher , will write the exam in a month.
Will be visting this question to see how others made the decision.

I had chosen 1.4 since , we have much info , many mock tests and other material to prepare for this.
Also , we can take an upgrade exam if needed after 1.4.

i got certified a week ago on 1.4
reason of why i choosed 1.4 is that i am using that in my company, and i got a book (K&B) left by my colleague, and that was 1.4 version. so i started to study on that (while at the same time having a look at 1.5)
i plan to do the 'upgrade exam' by end of this year.... if you are studyijng now i believe 1.5 is more valuable

hi Bert,

first of all many thanks to this site . i am preparing for scjp 1.4. because
1) still now i am familiar with java 1.4 only
2) my company uses java 1.4 only( still we didnt switched to 'tiger')
3) lot of material and support available for scjp1.4 in the net(also books)
4) my thinking is that if we get the scjp 1.4 first, then we can upgrade our skills easily to java 1.5
5) finally, lot of projects are still in 1.4, and also lot more are starting with jdk1.4(i think it will take some time for 'Tiger' come into scene

also K&B is excellent.

My collegues advised me to go for 1.4 and then take an upgrade exam.
So,I prefer 1.4.

1.5 was not yet available when I made the decision to get certified. At the rate I'm going though, 1.6 will be out before I take the 1.4 test.
Also, I work for a gov't agency that's in process of migrating from legacy systems and 1.4 is the platform.

I am a 10-year C++ programmer who hasn't worked for 4 years (moved overseas). I have written several Java programs and am good with tests. I took a few small practice tests and did very well.

I think 1.4 is probably easier for someone who is good with object-oriented programming, but has relatively little Java experience.
