The best way is to make the applet make internal HTTP requests to a webserver and have the webserver do the JDBC for the applet. JDBC direct from applets can only be done with a signed applet, but since firewalls almost always block the tcp/ip channels used by JDBC drivers, even signing the applet won't work except where eveyone's on a in-house network or something similiarly well-defined.
