My experience till now is its of very little value.
When I did scjp it was because I did not get a single call from a career event and when asked one rep of a company told me to prove it by taking scjp. I took it in 10 days and we met again in second event. He was true to his word and offered me sr. sw engr position right away. (I was stupid enough not to take that and come to sillicon valley and work as a sw engr.)
The company was in chicago www.cs-labs.com ... try it and good luck !!
Other than that i never found scjp any use in my job search or even sallary bargain.
Also I know couple of people who "proudly claimed" that they passed it w/o knowing much of java; just by mugging-up.
u did not mention which country/state u r looking in.

Can't .... do .... plaid .... So I did this tiny ad instead:
Java file APIs (DOC, XLS, PDF, and many more)
