Really basic applet question

OK... I have written several applets of varying complexity, all work fine in Appletviewer, and all work fine when I view them on the Web *from the machine I wrote them on*. Any other machine and I just get the grey shading where the applet should be - these machines run any other applet I know of just fine, so I assume it's me.
How could this happen? I don't see how it could possibly be using local files - I even moved them just to prove it to myself.

It seems to be a 'version' problem. To my knowledge JVM 1.3 compiled applets will not be visible in JVM 1.4 using browsers and vice versa ... but look at the link
 
It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
