executing applet

I got an applet code from the web and i compiled and now am trying to run it by
java classname
but it gives me following error
Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
I have never worked with applets before so if any one has any clue about whats going on, let me know. Thanks!

You need an html page to display the applet, like yourclassname.html
Then you type
appletviewer yourclassname.html
or view the applet in your browser by looking at the yourclassname.html file.
