JSP/Servlet - Applet

Hi,
I have been writing a program with JSP/Servlet and EJBs for Intranet usage for about 6 months. When it is completed,it will a complicated program with several heavy modules such as ERP,CRM, etc. During program testing, I saw that HTML restrict us to design complicated user interface and input validation. Also, refreshes on the web page after getting a response from web server may annoy users. Now, I think Applets for an alternative to HTML but I have no knowledge about how Applets will fit our project compared with JSP/Servlet(HTML based) solution.
Would you help me about alternatives for a complicated multithreaded program design.
