I think that you would call getClass().getResource( name of sound file ); in your applet to get the URL of the sound file to play...

There may be other issues related to doing this in an applet (such as setting the codebase and archive tags in the applet tag), and since this question is specifically about applets, I'm moving it to the applets forum.
