Really? Do you know if India offers a visa equivalent to the HB-1 visa in the U.S.? Or does anybody know anything about how foreigners typically get permission to work in India?

Dick...getting a work visa to india is no big deal. It's similar to getting in to canada and other places. If you get a firm job offer from a firm in india, u just submit a copy of the job offer to the embassy in US and get your work permit.
