components extending beyond the area of the applet?

I have a menu in applets on a jsp page, can the component extend past the applet?
or how do I do this, use layers and make the applet huge?

Having an applet extend outside its framing box would be too much temptation for people who want to do Bad Things to your system. So it's not possible.
You could have the menus done in JavaScript and let them pass events into the applet. Or you could simply make the applet frame big enough to hold its memus.
Or did you mean that the menus are applets that request different JSPs? In that case, the JavaScript menu approach is the easiest, I think. There are several prewritten JavaScript menu packages out there that can be dropped into your webapp.

Well I'm doing a lot of animation on the menus and after thought I could make the applet a layer on top of the page solving that issue. I do need to know however how to send a redirect command to the request object
The manu is one big applet
