geting ClassNotFound Exception on Applet

This is very frustrating
The applet is very simple, I'm down to the very barebones applet.
One class - methods are empty. On my jsp I tried both APPLET tag and
jsp-plugin:
<APPLET
code="MyApplet2.class" width=283 height=190 >
</APPLET>
none seem to work. When the page is displayed in IE I get class not Found exception.
The class (MyApplet.class) is at the same location/directory as the jsp page, and I made sure
it's readable by everyone. If I bring the page to my local system,
ftp the class and put them both in a local directory,
then the page displays it without a problem.
I have java1.3.1 on the server
and java1.4.0_02 on my Win2K local system.
