On the client side we use DHTML (JavaScript) and an applet to communicate with the server. The applet just grabs URLs and passes the results back to the javascript so that areas of the screen can be updated. This allows only parts of the screen to be updated without needing to refresh the entire page. We run exclusively on IE.
Due to support agreements, our client does not want us to use MS VM anymore (since it is no longer supported by MS). So, we're moving to the Sun plug-in. This means we've gone from version 1.1 of Java to 1.3.1_03 but this shouldn't be a problem as the later version is fairly backward compatible and we're not doing anything complex with the applet.
We're now getting problems however. Quite regularly we see the following exception in the console...
at sun.plugin.viewer.context.IExplorerAppletContext.getJSObject(IExplorerAppletContext.java:132)
at sun.plugin.AppletViewer.getDocumentBase(AppletViewer.java:957)
at sun.plugin.AppletViewer.getCodeBase(AppletViewer.java:1019)
at sun.plugin.AppletViewer.appletInit(AppletViewer.java:548)
at sun.plugin.viewer.LifeCycleManager.initAppletPanel(LifeCycleManager.java:171)
at sun.plugin.viewer.IExplorerPluginObject$Initer.run(IExplorerPluginObject.java:169)
So, it seems to me that when running with the Sun plug-in, the applet is having problems getting the JSObject.
Our page still uses the <applet> tag. We've just changed the VM setting in the tools->internet options screen in IE to use the Sun plug-in.
So, I'm wondering whether anyone has seen these types of problems before? Does anyone know what the solution is? Is there anywhere that discusses this in more detail?
Thanks in advance,
Paul Kelcey
