applet - servlet shared code on websphere

Recently I made a large, complex applet on IBM Websphere that communicates with a servlet. The applet code shares alot of the same, custom packages with the servlets. The problem is that the applet, being a client app, cannot read from any of the /lib directories on WebSphere. So, in desperation, I wound up putting the shared custom packages in 2 directories: in the /lib dir for the servlet, and in the applet's dir.
Does anyone know a way to avoid this redundancy?
