Looking for volunteer opportunities (bay area)

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
Hi,
I am studying for the web component developer exam and looking for some hands on experience in server side programming (I have some PHP experience) I can devote about 15-20 hours per week unpaid if necessary to help out any company. I do believe it will be a win-win situation. If you want somebody to work for you or know where I may find some opportunities, please email me and I can send out my resume too. Thanks!
Best Regards,

Hi:
I suggest you send out as many resume as possible. Normally, company cares more about your talent than wage. Even they want you to do volunteer work for them, they will be interested in you qualification firstly.
Just my two cents.

Well, I have about 2 years of experience but mostly in C and Perl. But companies are asking for like 5-8 years experience in XML, JSP and what not, the list seems to be never ending. How do I get projects if I don't have the experience and how do I get experience if I don't get projects? There you have it! Story of my life...

Well, you can invest some money and time to get certified, and then start from there.
One thing I hope to point out is: it is illegal for US company to hire F-1 or H-1b without paying them. And think about all the commitment they have to make: give you company account, let you access their file, data.....

Yep I do know about that rule for H1s. I am a permanent resident though. I gave my Java programmer certification and am on my way to giving the SCWCD but still no hands on experience and that's what counts!

Hi,
I know how you feel. It is very common paradox requirement from companies that do not want to hire you but oftenly suggest you need to have some experiences. Crap!
Have you work in different career previously? You could go back to that industry searching for IT post. You will have an edge compare to candidate that only have entry level IT experiences.
Cheers,
MCao

Never lose hope. Success may be around the corner. Think it this way: if each submit of resume has 0.01% chance, then it will be 100% after 10,000 submit!

I think it is all about quality of the person!
No matter what, a high school drop-out won't get the job of president of Stanford University. Don't you agree?

I couldn't disagree more Don. It's all about quality of resume. In my first month of being laid off, I sent out 4 resumes. Not one was online. I went out and actively talked to the companies hiring, got some of the hiring managers numbers and held discussions on the available positions, then spent a few days researching each company's vision, history, financials, etc. After that I put about 2 full days into each resume( and cover letter ), depending on job requirements, working environment, skills required, etc. If you think your job is over after that, think again. There is the follow-up calls, networking in the community, talking to current employees ( maybe you don't even want the job! ). I have gotten every job for which I've applied. Not because I'm some super guru programmer with a resume filled with extensive experience, research papers, and the like, but because I was persistent, I wanted the job, I told them what they wanted to hear, I was prepared, and I convinced them that they wanted me to work for them. My resume wasn't like the other 500 people that put in a resume ( along with resumes to 10, 000 other companies ). It was different. It didn't show that I wanted just any job, but that I wanted their job.
quality over quantity
my 2 cents

You have a very good point!
But there is a limit: the job must match your background pretty well. Beyond that point, whatever you try, it won't work. Image applying for the head coach position of Toronto Raptor. Within the limit, better the resume is, more jobs you apply for, better the chance is. Sometimes when you new to a field, or new to a area, I guess you have to work hard to send out more resume.

Jamie, Thanks for your tip. I will try and customize my resume, cover letter as much as possible. But I have to agree with Don in that your resume should have what the companies are looking for. In my case, I do have what companies are looking for but just not enough experience and not ALL their requirements which now-a-days are never ending. Maybe I just need to be more pushy and work smarter and harder towards getting a job.
FYI, I did get a volunteer position. It's in Delphi though. But I am up to looking into any new skill and gaining experience at this stage. Thanks all for your input! I appreciate it.
