Grey area on Internet explorer

I installed J2sdk on one machine but when I try to open applets using Internet explorer a grey area appears.
How can I overcome this problem.

Also, if I want to display an applet on a web site, how can I make sure that the applet will be viewed by visitors to the site. I noticed there are some websites using applets which you can view from any browser.
