Applets and OS X

I don't think this is an Applet problem per se, but maybe someone here will have the answer!
I have a swing applet (compiled on my PC using javac -target 1.4). I added the class files to a jar file and installed on a web server.
The <applet> tag looks something like this:

The applet works find on Windows (with the appropriate Java Plug-in installed). But on Mac OS X machines it is intermittent - sometimes when the page is loaded I get a "applet notinited" error, sometimes it's fine.

I checked the console and get the typical "class not found" messages.

Does anyone have any ideas? Any Mac experts? At this point I am looking at any possibility - corrupt cache, proxy issues, etc.

What browser are you using in Mac OS X? IE or Safari? Also are you using the new 10.3 code (which includes the new 1.4.2 MRJ) or the 10.2 stuff. You may wish to try compiling your code using a target of 1.1 if possible.
