why applets are heavyweight while japplets are lightweight

This is really a discussion of AWT (Applets) vs. Swing (JApplets). AWT is "heavyweight", meaning that AWT components like Buttons, Choices, and TextAreas are each connected to a native resource (a Windows Button, Choice, or TextArea). Swing components, on the other hand, are "lightweight" because they don't use these native resources -- they are drawn entirely from Java code.
