Why occurence of IOException not possible in Applets ?

what is the significance of "volatile" modifier ?

Where did you read that IOException is not possible in Applets? I don't know of anything that would stop an IOException from occuring if you called a method that can throw one.

"volatile" means that a variable's value can change by something external to the program. This is a fairly advanced topic and has nothing to do with Applets. From my experience, its use is very rare.
