<applet archive="reload.jar" code="uk.ac.reload.editor.EditorFrame.class" codebase=$codeBase >
ARCHIVE="./lib/jdom.jar"
...
ARCHIVE="./lib/AppleJavaExtensions.jar"
code ="uk.ac.reload.editor.EditorFrame"
</applet>

This looks strange. What are the 'archive="..."' lines supposed to do? They are not part of the applet tag. Are you trying to get parameters into the applet, or should those jar files be part of the applet classpath? As they are, they accomplish neither.

I'm not clear on where the files are that the applet is supposed to open - on the local drive, on the server hosting the applet, or somewhere else? The stack trace makes it look like they are on the local drive - does the applet have permission to open them (because normally an applet wouldn't be allowed to access local files)?
