If you are preparing for SCJP, I suggest you take 1.5 since either way
you will later think of upgrading it. If you take 1.4 like many others, later
they eventually took the upgrade to 1.5. They end up purchasing two
vouchers. Whereas, you can use the other voucher to good use by taking up
SCBCD, SCWCD or SCEA part 1. Saves you more money and puts you ahead.
The thing you have to worry about though is more studying since new
features were added. This is what I thought about when I decided to take
1.5. Be smart, save more.

Well the decision you have to take? If I am at your place, then definitely I would go for SCJP 1.5.

Though still companies are using 1.4 version of java, but I think doing certification in the current version is always wise and better. Definitely a time will come when 1.5 will replace 1.4

Note: Sun is offering a free re-take for the exam if you
purchase a voucher http://www.sun.com/training/index.xml?printFriendly=true
So buy it now while the re take is still available this will lessen your
fears on pursuing SCJP 1.5.

I bought my voucher last April 2006. It's good until February 28,
2007 that's one whole year. It's one year.

I think you should consult this link to find out more:

Should I start preparation by studying Java language specification 3rd edition first or some book .as topics added in SCJP 1.5 are totally untouched for me .

Please suggest

No need to refer JLS Third edition for SCJP.

Purchase SCJP 1.5 by Kathy Sierra and Bert Bates. Its for the exam objective 310-055

Plus you can try lots of mock exams which you can find from our SCJP FAQ Section.

According to the book by K&B the exam is in Multiple Choice
and Drag and Drop Format. For best advise consult the Java Ranch
Faq http://faq.javaranch.com/view?ScjpFaq .

Uhmmmm... Darn... I should have known this earlier! What do you think are the chances(percentage) if I didn't buy any study guide book and just took the exam? I'm out of budget, but if I knew this earlier I would've taken it anyway...

If you didn't buy the K&B Book, you should have atleast and idea of your chances by taking the free mock exams available. This will measure your
chances of passing the exam.

I was also out of budget before when I ordered the K&B Book
(310-055), but i realized if a lot of people come into the exam
unprepared and receive failing marks even those with years of experience
then i need to prepare well, so I borrowed money and bought the book.
After the exam, you will find the book is still useful as a reference
based from other professionals.

Goodluck!
