I need to support online editing of files such as Microsoft Word documents.
When you download a file and open it through a web page, is it possible to retain the path to the file in a variable on the client . I want to use this path to upload the file to the server once the file has been edited by a user on the client? Or is there a better way of doing online editing?

Welcome to JavaRanch.

The download of a file is under the control of the browser (and the user controlling it) - neither an applet nor JavaScript can get at the location where the user stored the file.
During upload, the browser might use the same path as default that it used when the last file was downloaded, but that's not guaranteed (and browser-specific to begin with).
I think you'll have to depend on the user to navigate to the file.

Don't get me started about those stupid light bulbs.
