Java run time installed or not?

i have embedded java applets in asp.net code. when i am deploying the code, the image is not visible. i need to find out whether java run time is installed in the particular machine or not and according to that i need to pop up a message to prompt the user to install java run time. can anyone help in this as how it can be done?

As part of the applet tag you can specify alternate HTML which will be displayed if applet support is unavailable. That could contain text to indicate the problem, or JavaScript code that opens a window.
