Hi!
I am in trouble and thought may be someone here can help me out.

I worked for 1.5 years in Microsoft technologies and later for 6 months on java. After my marriage i have came to South Africa.
As most of you would understand that it takes long to get a job and process work permit in a new country. In the mean time, I am planning to do a Java certification but i know nothing about it.

What i want to know is -

1. How should i prepare, like giving online mock tests etc. Suggest some websites which can be useful for that.
2. Recommendations on books.
3. As i am new to java, How long should i prepare before actually give the exam. What i mean is, I want to know the dificulty level of the exam.
4. Also, I would like to know how do i get vouchers for exams(for SA or India).
5. How much the certification will help in my career?

(Bottom line is - i don't want to sit idle at home and also i don't want my future employer to think that i was doing nothing during the gap period i had in my career)

Hope i am not sounding stupid! Hope someone would be able to help me out!

Thanks in advance,
Divya

Divya you have come to the right place and all your questions are answered here. First and foremost you should read through the SCJP FAQ section, which answers most of your questions. But anyway here are some quick answers.

1. You should first decide which version of SCJP you would like to take. The new version is 1.5 but most companies are still using 1.4. Either way I feel you will gain.
2. If you decide on SCJP 1.4 you should use the SUN Certified Java Programmer & Developer for Java 2 Study Guide by Kathy Sierra & Bert Bates.
3. If you have past object-oriented programming knowledge, reading K&B book, i feel you can be ready in just couple of months.
4. Mock exams and quizes are available, just navigate through the forums to find them.
5. Certification is always helpful, because it shows that your competent in your field and you have taken the certification to prove that.

I wish you all the best and post all your concerns and queries here. There are always ranchers here to help you out.

You will need to buy the voucher from SUN directly.

Go to java.sun.com and then choose Training --> Certification. On the right hand side you will see a column heading called "Certification Links", click on "purchase exam" there. Its user friendly from there.

BTW I noticed, you will need to click "select your country" link to find locations in SA. You should just call them to verify the procedure.

Hope this helps.

Check ou the link
'..Purchase a voucher ...certification exams between July 1 and September 30, 2006, and should you need it, you can take the exam one additional time for free...'

http://www.sun.com/training/savings/retake.xml

You can use it till next year 2007 Feb.

BTW I'm also preparing for the exam (1.5) and find Kathy Sierra & Bert book good.I recommend to take the latest avialble version of java(1.5 ) exam.

All the best.
