Is there any way for an applet to access the url query string similar to the way query strings / variables in the url can be accessed in cgi scripts?

Which URL are you talking about - the one of the page in which the applet is hosted? You could use LiveConnect to access the HTML page and the URL property of its document object, but I don't think the URL is available to an applet.

Yes, the URL of the page that the applet is on. For example the URL for this BB.

Would there be anyway for an applet on the this page to get to the variables trailing the cgi in the URL?

a work around would be to pass the value in as an applet parameter
