Welcome to JavaRanch.

On the internet, "upload" generally means from a client to a server. But the applet runs on the client, so if the files are on the client as well, it would be more appropriate (and much easier) to do file I/O. Applet need to be especially enabled to do that, though (see here for details).

on the other hand if you want to retrieve a file from the server that the applet came from you can use a HttpURLConnection

Thanks a lot for your reply sir.
Hope the correct way would be how to get an excel file in applet and parse it.
Or it can also be like getting the input in a text area separated by delimiters and parsing them.
Could you please help me???

Parsing the contents of a text field and reading an Excel file are two very different things. Which do you need help with?

The POI and JExcelAPI libraries are commonly used for this; you can find links to them on this FAQ page.
