reading character from a string array  RSS feed

Hello,
got stuck at the following instance:

say for example i have String s[]={"amal","shah"}
now here s[0] has value amal...now i want to read characters from the array s[0].....i initially thought of using parseType method for converting string to char...but found out that this method is applicable for converting strings to numeric values...unable to get through...help apprecited.
