showDocument() - ignored?

+Pie Number of slices to send: Send
According to the API:

showDocument(URL url) - This method may be ignored by applet contexts that are not browsers.

showDocument(URL url, String target) - An applet viewer or browser is free to ignore showDocument.

Is what it says for browsers correct? I.e., is it true that a browser can ignore showDocument(URL url, String target) but it shouldn't ignore showDocument(URL url)?

I've had some browsers ignoring showDocument(URL url, String target) calls, and am thinking about using showDocument(URL url) instead - but is the latter 100% reliable?

Cheers,
James

If there is a browser that ignores it, it would be a bug according to the javadocs. But all the mainstream browsers/Java plugins handle this correctly, so I don't think you need to worrry about it.

Thanks Ulf. It just seemed a little odd that browsers could ignore one call but not the other - though I suppose I can see some logic behind it.

James
