How to make the applet so that it can read and write reguler files.

I think you may need to sign the applet to do this.

But maybe it's possible - without signing - to just read from/write to the root /default directory... Can anyone confirm or clarify?

No, using any functionality of the java.io package is disallowed for applets. The workaround is either signing the applet or modifying policy files, both of which are explained here.

It is sorta covered in the JavaRanch Style Guide.
