Studying for 5.0 But May Need to Take 1.4

Greetings,

I am attending a distance learning school that requires, and pays for, the SCJP 1.4 certification. I am "allowed" to use the SCJP 5.0 certification to cover this requirement, but the school will not issue a voucher for version 5.0. Ultimately, I want the 5.0 certification. My options are:

1. Take the 1.4 certification offered by the school and pay for the upgrade exam to 5.0 myself ($100).

2. Just take the 5.0 exam and pay for it myself ($200).

I have already purchased the Sierra/Bates book for 5.0. My question is, will studying this book to adequately prepare myself for the 5.0 exam and giving some study time to the 1.4 items that were dropped for the 5.0 exam allow me to succesfully pass the 1.4 exam? Or would I have to put significant effort into studying the 1.4 topics on their own in order to be able to pass the 1.4 exam?

My inclination is that studying sufficiently for the 5.0 exam and giving some time to bit manipulation, the Math class, and reserved words (as these are the items that were dropped for 5.0 according to Bert Bates in a separate post) would allow me to pass both exams. Credible confirmation of this hypothesis would be appreciated.

the difficulty level of scjp 5.0 is higher compared to 1.4. also a new topic which is generics is also added in scjp 5.0. also covariant returns, Enums etc are also things that were introuduced newly to scjp5.0. my advice would be for you to take the scjp 1.4 exam first and then upgrade it as you have mentioned that you get a free voucher to do the 1.4 exam. you do not need to study any more material but just go through some notes on bit shifting and bit manipulation because these were taken off from the scjp 5.0. that way would be much more economically feasible....

hope this helps...

Dinuka,

Thanks for the response. This is the direction I'm heading.

Does anyone else have an opinion?

Thanks,

TR

Hi Terry,

Go ahead in the direction you are heading but stop once to take these mock tests , which will cover all the topics of 1.4

Thanks Praveen,

I'll take a look at the mock tests, which are always a welcome recommendation. I also need to study some of the items that were dropped for the 1.5 certification, like bitwise manipulation and the Math class.

I'd still like to know what other people think about the Sierra/Bates 5.0 book as a study guide for the 1.4 certification.

Thanks again Praveen,

TR
