I would like an applet to communicate via USB to a simple serial device (not mass storage or HID), sort of like we used to do with good old fashioned RS232C. (Sorry; I'm dating myself...) Are there any applet restrictions? Any USB driver issues, like getting around or through them? Any good examples available? Any suggestions or advice appreciated. Thanks.

An applet can't normally access local I/O devices. The way to do it is to sign it, or change the local security policy. See HowCanAnAppletReadFilesOnTheLocalFileSystem for details.

The http://faq.javaranch.com/java/JavaIoFaq points to a couple of articles about using USB from Java, and a library that actually does it.
