I just wasted about half an hour at $40 an hour while my bench tech tried to tell me that applets have to have the JRE installed separately after a clean rebuild from disk wipe and system re-install. This is not how I understood it. It would seem that with megabyte installations now routine for browsers that applet java runtime would be obviously long-ago retired as an issue.

I couldn't get it across to him that I had lots of very well informed people to ask. Answers of all skill levels welcomed and requested.

I want to write him a detailed workup on the matter.

Most browsers don't ship with Java installed by default.

IE and Safari don't come with a JRE, and the Firefox download pages give no indication that one is included, either. So I'd say that in general, no, a JRE is not included.

Of course, a number of PC manufacturers ship Windows with Java preinstalled these days (as is OS X), so a separate JRE installation might still not be necessary.

Okay, I will inform my bench technician that he is correct. His assertion meets the tests provided here.

I'm not sure what you consider to be "applet engines", but this topic is about JREs (or JRE plugins) installed in browsers; they aren't used for learning.
