This week's book giveaways are in the Jython/Python and Object-Oriented programming forums. We're giving away four copies each of Machine Learning for Business: Using Amazon SageMaker and Jupyter and Object Design Style Guide and have the authors on-line! See this thread and this one for details.
There is nothing like harder or easier. An SCJP is an SCJP and the only difference between 4 and 5 is the set of new features that were added. One thing is sure as the K&B book says is that "it is no rocket science", so if you are going for the 5 version of the exam, you just have to study a bit more which is always good. Even I'm planning for an upgrade from 1.4, but may be later this year.
SCJP 1.4, SCWCD 1.4 - Hints for you, Certified Scrum Master
Did a rm -R / to find out that I lost my entire Linux installation!
I would sincerely suggest you not to look at which is harder or easier, unless your aim is only to get certificate. If you want to do good in the industry, which I am assuming you do, it is important that you try to learn as much as possible. Studying for a certification gives you a good opportunity to learn several aspects of the technology that you may not use in your projects so often, but nonetheless, turn out to be very critical whenever they are used.
Besides, 1.5 is the latest. If you don't like to buy an outdated phone, an outdated laptop, then why go for an outdated version of an exam ?
In case you still decide to go for 1.4, you can use our exam similator JQPlus V4 for free
