Welcome to JavaRanch!

The programming experience is only a recommended guideline -- not a requirement. The current SCJP exam is for version 1.5, although the 1.4 version is still being offered.

I think you will find a lot of your questions answered in our SCJP FAQ.

Hi Vats,
I only took Java in college and it's been a few years since then. I plan to take the SCJP very soon. I would think that taking a programming class would make things much easier while on the job, but maybe not necessarily for passing the exam.

Hello,

I studied Java for 4 years in college and have 4 years of professional experience with developing in Java.

My academic knowledge of seems to be a better help to me than my professional experience (which is mainly JSP with Struts and Stripes frameworks).

I'm still having to study quite a lot for this exam.

I think that it will be much more difficult without a programming background. With sufficient time and motivation - you should be able to pass the exam just fine.

Thanks,
Richard
