I read off of "head first servlets and jsp" that you need to
be a "sun certified java programmer" (scjp) first.

does the "head first java" prepare you for that?
or do you need another book in order to be able to pass that test?

and if so, any recommendations?

Head First is an excellent introduction to Java, but the SCJP exam drills a bit deeper on certain details, so you would likely need a book that focuses specifically on exam material. See our SCJP FAQ for some suggestions.
