What's more important; to get a good score or to get a thorough understanding
of the Java language?

Hi,

To get a good score:

You have to read a book starting from page 1 until page N, i suggest K&B.
After that, solve as much mock exams as possible (don't forget the mocks of K&B, they are perfect).

Please check the following mocks:
JavaRanch Mock Exams
John's Exam
Dan Chisholm Exams

Best of luck ...

From my experience, after you've gone through K&B book, write sample code to test your knowledge and concepts, and take as many mock tests as you can.

I can no stress enough the point about writing sample code and taking mock exams.

...and GOOD SLEEP! :-)

There is no substitute for writing sample code and practice. If you have little experience in Java I suggest you to write as much code as possible. Especially for tricky topics like Threads, generics etc
