hi friends,

i am planning to write SCJP1.5 . i have read 6 chapters in K&B book. But most of my friends are preferring SCJP1.4 as they feel that is much more easier. They are advicing me to go for 1.4 as 1.5 is very difficult to clear. Moreover people are telling that getting certified is what matters and no one is goin to actually see whether you are SCJP1.4 are SCJP1.5.Is this true? Is it better to go for 1.4 as it is easy to prepare and clear it? please advice me on this

I recomment you study and go for the 1.5 exam. Yes, it is more difficult and it brings up new things, but they are used in real world programming and it is better for you to know them. It may not matter at a job interview which certification you have, but the technology is fast evolving (1.6 has already been released), and it's not worth returning into the past.

I think it depends on what you are looking for.

Quite possible that employers might not know the difference between 1.4 and 1.5. So if you are just looking out to put SCJP on your resume, 1.4 is easy and works well too.

However, with the release of 1.6, 1.4 would be a little outdated. 1.5 has many new features. Also down the line, may be your employer upgrades to 1.5. And to top it all, its the satisfaction of learning. In this case, 1.5 makes sense.

At the end of the day, its your call .

In the past during several interviews I was asked which versions of the languages I knew. While it really makes little difference they wanted the most recent version. Sometimes the language was 99.9% the same and they still wanted someone who knew the newest version. The programmers never used the new features but the human resources staff were told to find people who knew the latest version so they did.

Even if you don't use it or need it the best path is to learn the newest version. You are more likely to get hired.

And this language is quickly evolving and growing. To not learn the newest features is to be left behind. Waaaay behind.
