Hi,

passing null in println is ambiguous, similarly passing null in StringBuffer append method is also ambiguous because method is overloaded to take many objects, when we are passing null then more than 1 methods are eligible for execution that's why its giving ambiguous call error.

That certainly helps explain the result. But is there another way of determining what happens?

Getting someone to think and try something out is much more useful than just telling them the answer.

The method println(null) is same as println(char[]), it is ambiguous for the type PrintStream
