o/p :

3
>name:john<
><
>sex:m<

1. Why does the following return only a String[] of 3 elements ?
and not return the last empty string i.e "" between last 2 characters(;
in "name:john;;sex:m;;"

2. Also if we make the String this "name:john;;sex:m;;;;;;;;;;;;;" The
output doesn't change Why..?

Hi

This is because of the split method character, which does not take limit argument then the last empty string will not be taken to consideration
See APL documentation for
String.split(regex)
String.split(regex,int limit)

Thanks

Here the argument you are passing is the regular expression not simply a string.(Study regular Expressions for further clarification)
refer the split method in the API docs.snip from there:
<snip>
The string "boo:and:foo", for example, yields the following results with these expressions:

Regex Result
: { "boo", "and", "foo" }
o { "b", "", ":and:f" }
</snip>

Hope this will help.

Thanks&Regards
Krishna
