OK, nevermind the face-lift... it's not that important what it looks like, but functionality is very important.

Here's my suggestion: http://www.simplemachines.org

This is the best free forum-script I have ever come across. I first found out about it at this wonderful website: http://www.donationcoder.com. From there I found the first link above.

See this thread for more information on complete forum conversion. I have no idea how you guys came to use something "odd" like "Infopop Eve", next to such forum scripts like the following:

Invision Power Board 1.x
Invision Power Board 2.x
phpBB 2.0.x
XMB 1.8 Partagium
YaBB 1 Gold SP 1.x
YaBB SE 1.5.x
vBulletin 2.x.x
vBulletin 3.x.x

but hey, you must have had your reasons. Anyway, please see this very important thread on complete forum conversoin from multiple formats to the SmartMachines forum-structure: http://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=30945.0

Unfortunately, Infopop Eve is still unsupported, but it is recognized by the smartmachines guys and a conversion tool is being worked on. If you show interest in the whole thing, the tool might be written quicker

This is just one suggestion. I personally love the way smartmachines works... besides, it has just about the best spell-checker I've ever seen on any forum. Ever. Nothing in terms of either shareware OR freeware forum-scripts can beat it IMHO. That's a "minor" feature, but the other stuff doesn't have to hide from the competition either. It's very fast, has a great post input-interface and I imagine it has excellent administrator functionality, like most forum scripts.

What JavaRanch.com is currently using seems pretty outdated, and it's missing some of the absolutely crucial features for any forum today. Some of these features include the ability to be notified by email about thread updates/personal messages, um, generally more control of personal messages, a more sophisticated input-interface with quick access to smilies and formatting tags, image linking tags and other tags of similar nature, the ability to upload files/images easily... the latter could be extremely useful on a forum like this. This is a coder's place. Sometimes someone might want to upload some code if he/she has a question, or upload a screenshot to show a particular problem to others, making it far easier for others to help because they can see what the problem is.

And and and... this may or may not have been discussed before, but I'm new here and thought I'd bring it up.

Cheers!

It's been discussed many times before. You might be interested in those discussions. Search right here in the "JavaRanch" forum to find them.

By the way, some of the features -- avatars and file attachments, in particular -- aren't available because we don't want them. Others (email notification for updates and for private messages) are already present -- you may just need to read the help file.

The answer to that is rather simple... none of those other boards existed back many years ago when this forum was first set up. Infopop (UBB) was the number one board on the web at the time. There were no free web boards at the time except for hosted solutions that put their own ads on your forum.

Makes sense. Thanks for the explanation! So what's holding you guys back from performing a large-scale upgrade to a different forum-script?
