Volunteer: Beginner Java Programmer

I just started learning Java, besides learning from books and participate in Cattle Drive, I'd like to volunteer my time (about 5 hr/week) to a real-world project to enhance my understanding and gain group development experience.

Would you please describe your project? I don't mind spending $50 (SQL is a good skill set on my resume anyways), but I'd like to know more before I commit time and money. Thank you.

PS. Can SQL 2005 Express do the job?

Thank you. Transact-SQL is the SQL dialect of SQL Server. Our application uses Hibernate for saving data to the database. We use Transact-SQL stored procedures and straight JDBC for displaying data from the database.

In regards to SQL Server Express, we use services not available with this edition. Moreover, all developers need to use SQL Server 2005, Developer Edition.

Thank you. We have reviewed your resume.

We are currently analyzing how we can work with you. This is a challenge. Our project will eventually produce a software product. The source code is proprietary and copyrighted. Due to these factors, we are not able to distribute the EAR files for the application and services. We also would not be able to distribute the DDL file for the database.

We may be able to send you requirements and design specifications. This would provide you with some experience of which you are seeking. We are still working on this.

I don't know if this will help, but I can sign a NDA (Non-disclosure Agreement) to protect your product. In my University, all graduate students sign this to protect the intellectual properties and other proprietary information of the research sponsors. Because of this practice in school, I fully understand and exercise fully the ethics and responsibility of a project participant.
