It came to my attention recently that the prospective employee's OBJECTIVES part of a Resume my be an American thing and that it is not used in, for example, the UK.
I have always had that short section in my resume and I just want to double-check that in the USA it is still OK to include it.
The argument went that in the other job market, most employers are far more interested
in whether you can do the job than how you would like your career to progress.
I think that in America at least, and considering the job situation in our fields, an employer better care or at a minimum not be put off if they see that section in a resume... what do you'all <southern accent> think?
I'd also add that the employer, I think, would like to know if the match is going to be good even if the applicant is qualified... For example, a Java programmer could conceivably be technically able to do great work in COBOL for a company, except that he would throw up at the prospect of doing so. It would not be in his objectives to do more COBOL...

I think "objectives" is an important part of a resume. You should leave it in.

I agree, I put "position sought" right at the top of my resume just after my name and address. (The dry cleaning bill for my suits would be onerous should I have to do Cobol work.)

Cobol Smobol
I have been doing C++ for 8 years. Now that I have a tast for Java I will NEVER go back to C++. I make it clear in my Objectives that I want to do Java. No point in wasting time interviewing with someone who wants me for my C++ skills.
