K&B Chapter 3 says a number can be stored in a long variable by adding L or 1 (0xFFFF1 for example) to the end. Is it supposed to be 1 (the number) or l (lowercase L). If it's the former, it doesn't make any sense because 1 the number can be treated as a digit being part of the whole number?

Upper or lower case L can be used -- not the number one.

This is why using an uppercase L is strongly preferred over a lowercase l, although both will work.

It's also why the convention of using the courier (and courier-like) monospaced font for code is sublimely retarded.

because the method call was for "method1()" and NOT for "methodl()".
