Hello,
So glad I found this site, read some of the messages and was impressed. Well I am similiar to some othes here. I have just finished a 9 month intense course with 2 months of java, I am studying for java cert now.
I got an offer to do TCL (heard of it?) then in 6 to 12 mos they will do Java. I worry that TCL will only get me so far and that I will start to forget Java. I can try to volunteer on projects and work on my own but that will be difficult to maintain.
Good Points
TCL is unix based -will learn a lot of UNIX
about 500 jobs for unix on one day
get that much needed real experience
Large company, stable with training programs
Bad points
5 jobs for TCL on monster
Wont be doing Java until who knows when!
Will I get holed into Java and nobody will want to hire me as they will assume I have forgotten Java.
I have thought of taking the job and if after 6 mos we are not doing Java then changing jobs, but I would like to stay a year somehwere, and I want to feel good about where I am working.
I do seem to get a lot of interviews so I am not feeling terribly desparate yet, I have time to keep looking.
I have done vb, java, and oracle in class and have a little helpdesk exp and a finance major so I am marketable. It this opportunity good or limiting?
Thanks
JeffD

My gut reaction would be to tell you to wait for a Java position.
I recruit for a lot of UNIX based development positions. I've nver heard of TCL. You had the right instinct to search on Monster to get a snap shot of what the future market for that skill would be.
If your not desperate, walk away. You don't want unrelated experience driving a stake between you and your investment in Java training.
Let me know what you decide and how your search goes.

I would have to agree with Patrick.
I knew a few people at my old job who worked with TCL. It stands for "The Captain's Log" believe it or not! Heee! Heee!
Anyway it's not object oriented, has nothing to do with Java and if you get to be any good at it, the company might not want you to move to Java development. Then they would have to train someone else for the TCL - not a sound business investment.
Keep looking for the Java job if you can wait a bit.
Good luck!
Matt
