Can someone give me an idea on how much will you get after tax if youre earning 65K (e.g. in California or other state). How much does the state and federal tax actually get from the total package (% only). Is the standard of living cheaper in US? Food, clothing and transpo? Im currently working in Melbourne,Australia and planning to move and worked to US. I know I have to consider other factors. I just want to give it a try.
The cost of living here in California is the highest in the country, because of housing. The five most expensive places to live in the entire USA are San Francisco (at #1) and four neighboring cities (including San Jose). The upside is that Cali is a beautiful place to live, so millions of regular working people quite literally pay the price. As far as taxes go, that depends on how you file - but let's say you're single with no dependents, and renting. It would be safe to estimate that almost 1/3 of your annual salary would be withheld in taxes, unless you have some good tax deductions ready (like property ownership.) I don't know how that compares to your current locale but that's about where we are in the Bay Area.

Thanks Julie for your advise! It really helps. Cost of living here in Australia is one of the expensive in the world (I think) like their food, clothing and especially the housing because of this GST (tax!). I am not a citizen here. I just came here to Australia to work. My plan is to be able to earn & save and hopefully go back to my home country. I think working up there in US would be better for me. Theres a lot of opputunities for IT prof. But...I will still consider other factors. Hopefully I can arrived with a decision.
